Mbappé’s first two Madrid seasons show why competition splits matter

2 September 2026 · Kylian Mbappé · Real Madrid · Season analysis

Kylian Mbappé joined Real Madrid in 2024, giving us a clean club boundary for a two-season comparison. The FootIndex snapshot records 31 goals in 34 LALIGA appearances and 2,917 minutes in 2024/25. For 2025/26 it records 25 goals in 31 appearances and 2,604 minutes. The raw league total fell by six, but he also played three fewer matches and 313 fewer minutes.

Minutes provide a more balanced view without erasing the decline. The first league row works out to one goal every 94.1 minutes; the second to one every 104.2. That is a slower recorded rate of roughly ten minutes per goal. It is still only realised scoring frequency. Without consistent information about penalties, shots, chance quality, injuries and role, the calculation cannot identify the reason for the change.

His Champions League rows move sharply in the other direction. FootIndex records seven goals in 14 appearances and 1,134 minutes in 2024/25, then 15 goals in 11 appearances and 912 minutes in 2025/26. The implied rate changes from one goal every 162 minutes to one every 60.8. UEFA’s published review independently identifies Mbappé as the 2025/26 competition’s leading scorer with 15, which gives this particularly striking row a valuable organiser-level checkpoint.

The contrast illustrates a common comparison error. If league and Champions League goals are blended, Mbappé moves from 38 goals in 4,051 minutes to 40 in 3,516. The combined rate improves substantially even though the league-only rate worsens. Neither statement is false. They answer different questions, and the competition labels decide which story the arithmetic tells.

Real Madrid’s announcement verifies the start of the club relationship, while LALIGA and UEFA provide competition-specific reference pages. FootIndex does not copy their rolling career headline into its season table. A competition website may update at a different time, count a newly completed match or correct an event before the local import runs. The proper response to disagreement is a dated reconciliation, not choosing whichever total looks more impressive.

Sample size is especially important in Europe. Eleven or fourteen appearances can contain a wide range of opponents and knockout circumstances, and a small number of high-scoring matches can move the rate dramatically. Fifteen goals are real recorded output; they do not guarantee the same rate in the next eleven matches. The article describes the completed sample and makes no forecast.

The bounded conclusion is that Mbappé’s second Madrid season in this snapshot contains fewer LALIGA goals and a slower league scoring rate, but many more Champions League goals and a much faster European rate. FootIndex audited the inputs on 2 September 2026 and excluded cups, super cups, the Club World Cup and international football. Keeping that scope visible is what turns an eye-catching comparison into an auditable one.

Methodology

FootIndex rows were audited on 2 September 2026. Calculations include only Real Madrid LALIGA and Champions League rows for 2024/25 and 2025/26; minutes-per-goal is minutes divided by goals.
