Haaland or Mbappé? The filter can change the statistical answer

2 September 2026 · Player comparison · Filters · Data literacy

A player comparison becomes misleading when it begins with names rather than a question. In FootIndex’s 2024/25 domestic-league rows, Kylian Mbappé recorded 31 goals in 2,917 minutes for Real Madrid while Erling Haaland recorded 22 in 2,741 for Manchester City. Mbappé leads the total and the calculated scoring rate: one every 94.1 minutes compared with one every 124.6. That answers a tightly scoped question about realised league scoring in that season.

Change the season to 2025/26 and the ordering narrows. Haaland’s row contains 27 Premier League goals in 2,958 minutes, or one every 109.6. Mbappé’s LALIGA row has 25 in 2,604, or one every 104.2. Haaland leads the raw total by two; Mbappé retains the slightly faster minutes-per-goal rate. Asking who scored more and asking who scored more frequently now produce different names.

Switch to the Champions League and the pattern changes again. Both players have eight goals in ten appearances in FootIndex’s 2024/25 records, although Haaland’s 772 minutes produce a faster rate than Mbappé’s 1,134. In 2025/26 Mbappé’s 15 goals in 912 minutes lead Haaland’s eight in 755 on both total and rate. UEFA’s own comparison page wisely presents achievements and context rather than claiming that one table settles who is better.

Domestic-league comparisons also cross environments. The Premier League and LALIGA do not contain the same opponents, calendars, tactical distributions or match states. Minutes and goals can be compared arithmetically, but the result is descriptive rather than a controlled experiment. It cannot show what either player would have produced in the other team or competition.

Career reputation should not leak into a season calculation. Haaland and Mbappé have substantial records before these two seasons, and UEFA documents their wider Champions League histories. Those facts matter for a career question but not for deciding which 2025/26 row has the lower minutes-per-goal value. Mixing career achievements into a season filter is a form of changing the denominator after seeing the result.

The correct interface therefore lets a reader choose season, competition family and measure, then displays goals, appearances and minutes behind the rate. It should also warn when a row is missing rather than treating absence as a zero. A visible filter is not merely a convenience; it is part of the claim and makes the comparison reproducible.

FootIndex’s audit date for these eight rows is 2 September 2026. On this evidence there is no single statistical winner: the leader changes with the selected question. The useful conclusion is where each player’s recorded output was strongest, how much playing time supported it, and which information—penalties, shot quality, role and opponent strength—would be needed before making a broader judgment.

Methodology

This comparison uses eight FootIndex rows audited on 2 September 2026: each player's domestic league and Champions League records in 2024/25 and 2025/26. No causal or predictive model is applied.
